Shopping for deals has just gotten easier now that eBay has released its own smart personal shopping assistant, eBay ShopBot, on FB Messenger. Not only does it still provide the user with the same huge selection of products, it’s also powered by AI to create a better shopping experience through learning the user’s preferences and picking up conversational context.
As eBay’s chief product officer RJ Pittman mentioned: “Our vision is to make shopping with eBay as easy as talking to a friend, whether you are looking for something specific or just browsing for inspiration.”
To start on ShopBot, just search for eBay ShopBot on FB Messenger and it’ll get you started by offering you the different ways to shop: 1) Main menu, 2) Find that perfect thing, 3) Curated collections, and 4) Find it with a photo. From there, your exchange can be as general or specific as you like.
The app does a great job of filtering and identifying categories, size, and even style types – like “sleeve style” and “retro sneakers” responding with personal touches throughout the interaction.
With ShopBot pulling from the volume of eBay’s products and the interface not having a rigid Q&A flow, it’s easy to browse and get relevant results. But what makes ShopBot really powerful is its ability to understand context. In the middle of a search, users can add in additional filter criteria like “how about under $30” or “what about canvas sneakers in size 5” and the app incorporates it with no hiccups! Don’t see your size either? That’s ok, enter it in and the app can find those too.
Though ShopBot’s goal is to “make eBay as easy as talking to a friend”, it’s just not there yet. Sometimes it understands the extra search filter you insert, but sometimes it gets confused, leading you back to square one with a new search or pulling up results that aren’t relevant. All in all the bot offers a smooth shopping experience and with the sheer volume of products available from eBay, the user could browse and shop all day.
